There are many things for a homeowner to consider when faced with electrical panel replacement. Whether you are rewiring your home or have a damaged unit, it is always the best decision to stick with a qualified expert when undertaking such an important task. Here are some things to consider when replacing your electrical panel.
•Make sure you have the proper amount of outlets. There is nothing worse than realizing you will not have the correct service in order to power all of your appliances and gadgets. A professional can assess your specific needs and install equipment that can handle your home‘s electrical demands.
•Safety is number one. When installing a major electrical component such as an electrical panel, it is imperative to do so with great care. A professional has the understanding of home electrics many homeowners do not. It is never worth risking you and your family’s safety by trying to run electrical service alone.
•Problems always pop up down the road. By hiring a professional, you have the peace of mind knowing your electrical panel is installed correctly. This also saves you many headaches and dollars down the line by having the work done right the first time. If your panel is installed incorrectly, it will damage your appliances and cause other devices to not work properly.

By hiring a reputable team of electrical panel installers, such as those at Skilliez Electric, you can rest assured the job is done correctly and efficiently the first time. The installers will inspect your home, determine your specific need, and safely install your panel. By assessing your unique situation, the installers can also inspect your home for any other electrical problems that may occur. Don’t let faulty wiring in your home come as a shock, for more information on electrical panel replacement, please contact us.

Maybe you’ve heard someone say, “It’s just a matter of stringing a few wires from here to there!” But, then, that’s where the best of intentions can go seriously sideways.

Hopefully, the ongoing do-it-yourself craze (DIY) in home remodeling stops at the electrical panel, or adding new circuits to the home or garage: For sure, an experienced electrician should be called in to make sure any updates are done right and according to code.

For one thing, a licensed electrician is familiar with the permit process, whether he’s taking them out for new construction, or upgrading a homeowner’s panel from 100 to 200 amp service.

In the case of running wire, say, across a sheet-rocked garage ceiling, the homeowner may not understand the need for …

“Conduit”

Does the homeowner know why kind of conduit, fittings and terminal boxes he should be using, for example, if he’s hooking up new receptacles in his shop—exposed wiring running across a shop or garage ceiling presents a host of unsafe situations…not to mention electrical code violations.

And think of the questions that will be asked by a prospective buyer when he looks at the numerous DIY electrical jobs you completed on your own: “Did you get the right permits to do all of this?” they may ask. Ouch!!

Upgrading the panel…

Today’s 200-amp panel installations most definitely require the expertise of a San Jose Electrical Contractor. Skilliez Electric knows how to buy the best material and reasonable prices to make sure your upgraded electrical panel meets all the codes and regulations. Plus, they handle all the logistics of coordinating with the power company to make sure the power to your home is disconnected properly while we complete your installation.

Contact us for an estimate on your remodel, new construction or even those seemingly too-small-to-bother-us-with electrical improvements.

Avoiding Problems With Your Next Electrical Job – Choosing an Electrician

For the majority of people getting started on a electrical project is a complete nightmare. There are things that you can do to help ease the pain of getting started though. Aside from hiring a quality electrical contractor, you need to also take the time to fully prepare yourself for the job that you expect to be done. This should include having clear expectations of what you want done, a full contact and all materials worked out in advance. Many people think that buying materials themselves will save time and money; however, this is generally false because of the complications that it can involve. Avoiding these problems is quite simple and you are going to learn exactly how to do it.

Your first line of defense against problems is a clear contract. It should spell out exactly what you are going to be paying, and exactly what you can expect to receive in return. You should also look to ensure that contact information is included in the contract as well as information on how you can go about getting in touch with the company in the event of a dispute. The contact should also spell out clearly all payment terms. This would include any periodic payments due upon completion of specific stages of the job, the approximate date of those completions and any other specific details that will impact the contract and payment terms.

You should also discuss materials very carefully. If you are looking to have lights and such installed then you are likely to have some very specific ideas in mind about what you want. While these specific ideas are great, it is best to just discuss them with the electrician and allow them to actually purchase materials. They can often get discounts, as well as they carry the burden of ensuring that all of the parts are included. Any materials that you purchase are your responsibility to ensure that all parts are present. Avoiding this by just allowing them to purchase the materials is best. Provide a detailed list if you have specific items that you are interested in though since this can make it much easier to ensure you get exactly what you want.

Avoiding these problems is quick and simple, but will require thinking ahead. Taking the time to cover all of these aspects before the job actually begins will allow you to get the results that you want, without any major problems or complications. Just remember, things do sometimes take longer to complete than expected, if you find yourself in this position, you should feel free to take your time and carefully adjust your expectations and discuss all problems with the electrician that you choose to avoid confrontations and unresolved misunderstandings.

Tips to Hire Electrical Contractors and Electricians

Hire a licensed electrician in for your next home improvement job so you don’t sacrifice quality and safety. If a pipe leaks, the floor gets wet and some minor property damage may occur. If electricity is not handled correctly, severe injury or death can occur. So count on an electrical contractor for getting the job done right and done safely. Think about it. If a handyman can’t do the work that it takes to become a licensed electrician, they will probably perform improper or incomplete electrical repairs. This will eventually lead to serious, recurring electrical problems. The work will have to be redone or worse yet, may cause damages to life and property.

State licensed electricians carefully screen their staff to make sure they are fully prepared before tackling electrical jobs, and treat them with the accuracy and precision they deserve. You should always hire a skilled electrician to perform any electrical project, including home or office electrical wiring, installing a ceiling fan, electrical inspection or construction and remodeling. Outlet Wiring and Circuit Panel Upgrade by Electricians If you who try to handle electrical issues yourself, it can prove to be really dangerous and even fatal in a worst-case scenario. Go through the following checklist to see how important it is to hire an electrician for you and your family’s safety.

1. Electrical issues can be complicated and you may not have enough knowledge and expertise to handle the situation. A good electrician has the required knowledge and experience to deal with electrical complications and therefore he is likely to be able to analyze the situation better and handle it accordingly.

2. Dealing with electrical issues inappropriately may endanger your and others’ life at the same time. Hence, assigning an electrician for electrical jobs is always a safer option.

3. Allowing an electrician to take care of any electrical problem that you may be faced with will also help you ensure the safety of your house and business.

4. Fixing an electrical appliance yourself may result in damage to your equipment; an electrician is more likely to handle it better than you would.

Hiring a licensed electrician is no doubt a very important thing to do whenever you are faced with any electrical issue from adding and electrical outlet to bathroom and kitchen remodeling, but also remember you need to choose a good electrician in order to make sure that the repairs are made correctly.

Dealing with an electrician will ensure that you get the electrician that is best suited to your electrical needs.

Major Remodel – Upgrade Your Electrical Service!

If you are contemplating a major remodel, the addition of a room or garage, or a new kitchen you should consider upgrading your electrical service panel.

Thirty years ago, the average new home was equipped with a 60 amp electrical service connected to a screw-in fuse panel with two fuse blocks. The common distribution was a fuse block for the stove and one for the hot water tank. The balance of the homes electrical needs were served by six, 15amp screw-in fuses.

Twenty years ago the average new home was equipped with a 100 amp electrical service and some of them used the latest in technology, circuit breakers.

Now the average home is equipped with a 200 amp electrical service with a distribution panel handling up to 40, 15amp circuit breakers serving the electrical needs of the home.

North American’s are electrical power hungry. Today our air conditioning systems take more power than an entire home did 30 years ago. A kitchen, in a new home, will usually be equipped with a number of receptacles capable of supplying more than 60 amps just to counter top appliances.

Adding receptacles does not increase the available power if they are looped from other receptacles. To get more power to a location the circuit should run directly from the distribution panel.

Old style distribution panels, those with screw-in fuses are generally considered fire hazards. The contact between the base of the fuse and the buss bar oxidizes or charcoals from poor contact. In order for the current to continue to flow heat is generated. In many areas, insurance companies will not renew homeowner insurance if the home is equipped with an electrical distribution panel that has screw-in fuses.

If your current electrical service in your home is less than 200 amps, and/or if it has a distribution panel that uses screw in fuses, you should consider replacing it as a top priority in any major renovation project.

Ways to Cut Your Electric Bill

As concerned citizens all of us must make a concerted effort to be conscious citizens and save electricity. Electricity has become integral to life but imagine having to live without power.

Conservation of electricity benefits you personally as you will pay lower bills. Consider:

1. Doing an energy audit. This will tell you how and when you use energy and where the wastage lies. You will be able to make an “energy savings plan” by pinpointing exactly how you can cut back on energy consumption. Some ideas may be as simple as don’t leave the coffee machine on at all times.

2. Think about resetting the thermostat ten degrees lower during the night. If you can do this for say approximately eight hours a day you will save 10% on electricity without sacrificing comfort. Insulate the home in winter by drawing shut the drapes.

3. Check all insulation in the house. If you increase attic insulation to around 12 inches the electricity consumption will reduce by 20 percent.

4. Plant more trees around the house these will cool the house in summer and insulate the house in winter. Studies show that a green cover benefits in many ways.

5. Fluorescent light and LED bulbs are energy efficient. They use 75% less energy than ordinary light bulbs. These have a longer life and contribute to great savings.

6. Use energy efficient appliances. These use less energy and believe it or not a high efficiency refrigerator uses less electricity than a light bulb.

7. When you are away even for a few hours or days you should turn off and unplug all electrical appliances and turn settings on the thermostat, water heater, and refrigerator to the lowest setting.

8. Ensure that you use a water-saving shower head. Water heating costs for a family can be lowered by at least US$ 250 a year.

9. Weatherize your home. This helps reduce heating bills by 20% and cooling by at least 10 percent. Even when building a home or decorating it use weather friendly materials—those that are not good conductors of heat and cold. Install windows and glass panes in the roof in such away that you use sunlight to light up the rooms during day light hours. Make an effort to switch off lights and fans when leaving a room. Ensure that the filters in air conditioners and heaters are always cleaned and free of clog and dust.

10. If you live an energy efficient lifestyle you will see the numbers on the energy bill actually reducing. The power to cut energy costs is well within your control. It is as simple as only washing full loads and that to in cold water. Use the hot wash option only for very dirty clothes. Cook food only just before you are ready to eat that way you can save reheating costs as well as refrigerating costs of storing the food. Turn the thermostat of the refrigerator to minimum in cold or cool weather. Switch off freezers if they are not in use. Small contributions can all add up to significant amounts of power saved. And, power saved means money in the bank.

Electrical fires in our homes claim the lives of 485 Americans each year and injured 2,305 more. Some of these fires are caused by electrical system failures and appliance defects, but many more are caused by the misuse and poor maintenance of electrical appliances, incorrectly installed wiring, and overloaded circuits and extension cords.

The U. S. Fire Administration (USFA) would like consumers to know that there are simple steps you can take to prevent the loss of life and property resulting from electrical fires.

THE PROBLEM

During a typical year, home electrical problems account for 67,800 fires, 485 deaths, and $868 million in property losses. Home electrical wiring causes twice as many fires as electrical appliances.

THE FACTS

December is the most dangerous month for electrical fires. Fire deaths are highest in winter months which call for more indoor activities and increase in lighting, heating, and appliance use. Most electrical wiring fires start in the bedroom.

THE CAUSE

Electrical Wiring

• Most electrical fires result from problems with “fixed wiring” such as faulty electrical outlets and old wiring. Problems with cords and plugs, such as extension and appliance cords, also cause many home electrical fires.

• In urban areas, faulty wiring accounts for 33% of residential electrical fires. • Many avoidable electrical fires can be traced to misuse of electric cords, such as overloading circuits, poor maintenance and running the cords under rugs or in high traffic areas.

Safety Precautions Tips

• Routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring.

• Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.

• Use electrical extension cords wisely and don’t overload them.

• Keep electrical appliances away from wet floors and counters; pay special care to electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen.

• When buying electrical appliances look for products that are evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

• Don’t allow children to play with or around electrical appliances like space heaters, irons and hair dryers.

• Keep clothes, curtains and other potentially combustible items at least three feet from all heaters.

• If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.

• Never overload extension cords or wall sockets. Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker. Use safety closures to “child-proof” electrical outlets.

• Check your electrical tools regularly for signs of wear. If the cords are frayed or cracked, replace them. Replace any tool if it causes even small electrical shocks, overheats, shorts out or gives off smoke or sparks.

Finally, having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire. And remember to practice a home escape plan frequently with your family.

Whether you’re building a new home or renovating an old home, recessed lighting can be a key element in both the function and style of the space. It can highlight a single piece of art, a specific sitting area, or can be installed to light up a room the way chandelier lighting can’t. However, recessed lights may not be right for every space.

There are three main types of lighting that come into play when you design any room or living area. Ambient lighting provides general illumination, task lighting serves a specific purpose, and accent lighting highlights chosen spaces. One of the most attractive things about recessed lights is that they can be used to address all of these lighting needs.

This option is also very energy efficient because most are low-voltage lighting, and in turn will use less electricity. Though recessed fixtures are most easily installed between ceiling joists, some are designed specifically for retrofit applications and can slip into an existing ceiling space through holes made to accommodate wiring. However, concrete ceilings, ceilings with ornate plaster or delicate molding details are not good candidates for this type of lighting. In these spaces, choose a crystal chandelier, mini chandeliers, hanging lamps, wall sconces or table lamps instead.

To get the maximum benefits of recessed lighting, space the light according to the needs of the space. For instance, if you are lighting a task area, such as a kitchen, then direct a group of closely placed lights toward the counter or kitchen light. If you want less illumination by a kitchen table or breakfast nook, then space the lights further apart and direct them toward the wall. You can also install dimmer lights to control the illumination. If you need a recessed light to accent a specific area or object such as a painting, then use a low wattage bulb and aim the light accordingly.

Unlike many other types of residential lighting, recessed ones can be used to create drama in your home. When lighting a three-dimensional object, such as a fireplace, sculpture or flower arrangement, it is more effective to light it from two or three different angles. Instead of boring cabinet lighting in your kitchen, install recessed light fixtures in the bottom of your cabinets. The light will wash your counter top with focused light. Be choosy when selecting the trim for your recessed lights. The trim makes a design statement and can help focus the light, as well as nfluence the quality and glare.

Recessed lighting is perfect for maximizing space and creating drama in your home. Besides being beautiful and functional, it can save you a lot of money in electrical costs. Before you install recessed lights yourself, speak to an experienced electrical salesperson or consider hiring an electrician so that the job is done right. That way you can relax and bask in the glow of perfectly placed recessed lights.
